Located in the Wood River Valley, Hailey, Idaho is ofen referred to as "Idaho’s Hometown In The Mountains". The Shoshoni and Bannock tribes of Native Americans lived in the Hailey area before white settlers arrived. the first white settlers were fur trappers who came to the area in 1824 and shortly thereafter miners arrived. The city of Hailey is named after John Hailey, a two time member the Congressional delegation from the Idaho Territorys
Hailey today is home to 9,500 people, according the official U.S. census of 2021. The community combines business, tourism, and art with wide streets lined by trees and narrow alleyways. Homes are set back 25 feet from each other. It is located near the Challis and Sawtooth National Forests, and is surrounded by wild public lands.
The Wood Rive Valley is named after the Big Wood River. The Big Wood River flows south from its source in the Sawtooth Range, near Galena Summit, which is located in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The river flows between the Boulde Mountains in the north, the Pioneer Mountains to the east, and the Smoky Mountains which are located to the west. The river flows southward from Galena Summit to an area north of the city of Shoshone. The river flows beside Highway 75 for several miles.
The River flows through Ketchum, where it is joined by Warm Springs Creek and Trail Creek. It joins the East Fork Wood River in the Gimlet area south of Ketchum before passing through Hailey and Bellevue. The river continues south from the Wood River Valley into the northern portion of the Magic Valley, where it flows into the Magic Reservoir.
