Hailey, which was founded in 1881 and prospered from the 1880s mining boom, was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the mining in the area. The community received Idaho's first telephone exchange in 1883, and the first electric light system in 1889. In an effort to provide more entertainment options for the community, Bruce Willis, a resident movie star, invested in the downtown. The city is named after John Hailey who laid out the town in 1881.
